Children's Services

Children's SectionThe Nelson Library offers a variety of children's services and programs throughout the year.  Watch our Upcoming Events on a regular basis for author visits, storyteller tours and special events for the whole family.  Click on the links below for more information on each service provided.




Young Authors and Illustrators Club

Do you like to tell and write stories, draw pictures and cartoons?  Do you have a great imagination?  If your answer is ‘yes’, come and join the ‘Young Authors & Illustrators’ Club’ at the Nelson Municipal Library.

Young AuthorHere’s your chance to interview aliens, develop cartoon strips, chat with kitchen tables, illustrate limericks, invent magic potions, rewrite fairy tales … and much, much more!

We’ll tell stories, play word games, create animated cartoons, draw, paint, collage … maybe even make a small book with all your work in it.

Local artist and writer, Kate Bridger, heads up this club of future authors and illustrators. Open to participants ages 8 to 13, meetings are on Wednesdays 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. at the Nelson Library from January 27 to March 3.   

Registration is $65.00/participant (payable at the first session); all supplies and materials are included. Please register in advance at the Nelson Municipal Library by 6:00 p.m., January 22.

Reading Buddies - Read with the Nelson Leafs!

Take a shot at reading!If you are in Grades 2 to 5, here's a great way to practice reading.  Register for the Reading Buddies Program to read with a member of the Nelson Leafs.  Read together for a half hour after school with a one on one session with a member of the team. 

 Here's how it works:

  • Parents fill in a registration form
  • Pick a scheduled practice session each week (schedule to be announced) 
  • We'll match you with a Nelson Leaf Reading Buddy, schedule your times and you can begin!
  • At your session, sign in, choose something to read together, play games and hang out with a member of the team.

All sessions take place on the main floor of the Library.  Contact Nancy at 250-352-8283 for more information.

 

Grow a Reader

Grow a Reader TreeThis preschool Read-to-Me Club is designed for parents and preschoolers to read together at home.  Each child receives a reading log, stickers, a leaf on our tree, and a chance to win books.  Please register at the library or contact Nancy at 250-352-8283 for more information.
